Evolution of Tiger Lily's
Tiger Lily’s name was inspired by one of the J. M. Barrie characters in Peter Pan. The story embodies the belief that one should never lose their imagination and the dreams that develop when we are children; it also cherishes the idea of family and love. And so Betsy Knapp selected the ever so subtle yet meaningful character Tiger Lily, who was Peter Pan’s first love, as the namesake for the store.
In a way, Betsy Knapp’s first love was design born from the influence of her mother, who embodied the modern day working woman well before her time in the textile industry. It was Betsy’s dream to one day utilize her creative talents to build a business that embodied family. Interior design was the perfect pairing of those two goals. With her husband Bob Knapp, the two created a family-business that dedicates itself to making people’s homes and surroundings comfortable, livable and beautiful. With their daughter Samantha joining the business the legacy of a childhood dream that evolved from imagination continues into a second generation.

Meet Bob Knapp, the man behind the scenes who makes all things that are conceivable, achievable, at Tiger Lily's. A husband, father, co-worker, craftsman and visionary, Bob is truly a jack of all trades. A founding partner alongside his wife Betsy, Bob traded in his hard hat after more than 20 years in commercial construction, to bring Betsy's dream to reality. Her wish to one day own a design house that would allow clients to imagine and create, came to life in 1991 with the opening of Tiger Lily's. What was once a small show room with a single upholsterer has truly come full bloom, with more than 2,000-square-feet of design space and 14 artisans supervised under Bob's direction. The now family business offers a range of services with its core focus footed in custom craftsmanship. In addition to the upholstery and antiques collection, Bob will play an intricate role in the spring 2013 launch of Tiger Lily's own collection of modern furnishings and accessories available for wholesale and retail. Betsy Knapp is the matriarch of the family. As a wife, mother to four girls and "mom-mom" to seven beautiful grandchildren, it is naturally fitting that her title of the family-run-business is "Grand Dame." With family-togetherness at the core, her love for design roots back to Brooklyn, where as a child she watched and learned beside her mother who created textiles in a knitting mill. A self-taught interior decorator for residential and commercial spaces, Betsy is inspired by the creativity that defined her childhood and as such creates spaces that are intimate while well-suited for communal use. "I love what I do, Tiger Lily's is like a second home to me" says Knapp. "I try to infuse a bit of family into all my design approaches - whether we story board a wall with pictures; offer an oversized dining room table; or put a sectional in a formal seating room, I take to each project like a mother building values. It is all about sharing spaces and unity." Before Tiger Lily's was a family-operated business, it was a hus... Read More
After spending 10 years behind the camera as a television news reporter, Samantha Knapp's career path changed and she found herself working for her family's business, Tiger Lily's Greenwich, an interior design studio specializing in interior design, furniture revitalization and custom upholstery. Knapp and her mother immediately made a dynamic design duo; her inherent position as full time daughter was a true complement to her new role as full time interior designer. Knapp's style not only honored her mother's traditionalist approach, but added the perfect contemporary nod, infusing a "hip factor" into the brand. She immediately punched-up the ordinary in her design approach, capitalizing on the studio's work-on-the-premises selling point as way to preserve the vintage artisan trade found in antiques and one-off home furnishings. Her design is balanced; where she would mix bold colors she'd offset it with small scale patterns and when using raw materials find a complement with soft textured accents. Knapp's design approach ha... Read More
How We Work
Full-Service Interior Design
Open 20 years, Tiger Lily’s is the market leader of Luxury Custom Design Detail in Fairfield and Westchester Counties. We are the only local showroom to offer a curated library of textiles, wallpapers and trims ranging from the basics to textured contemporary neutrals, to boutique designer hand-block prints and established traditional English inspired prints. A current selection of tiles, rug samples and paint colors complement what we carry. Furnishings and home accessories are also layer throughout. Most often it is a sampling of the best of what we do creatively. Maybe our artistic painter worked through an old frame and then handed it over to our upholsterer who finished it with a beautiful fabric and nail heads, or maybe it is something I picked up internationally. I try to mix and match what we do by supporting vendors and local artisans we like. Supporting the community is a key value for us and it stretches beyond what we do to supporting those we like. Other times our showroom is an extension of our workroom; with client projects undergoing a transformation in our designer space. The showroom is fluid, it is always changing and constantly representing the opportunity and possibility of what can be when you put self-expression first.
The upholstery workroom is where the fun happens and where I am reminded every day that there is no comparison to hand crafted furniture and draperies. There is a creative feeling that resonates when you walk into the space, where at any given time our team of artisans are working on over a dozen individualized projects. On the production side, we cross language barriers working together as a team and a family. Beyond Tiger Lily’s being a family business, our head pattern cutter has been with Tiger Lily’s for over 20 years and her children work within. It is another way we put family first.
We have simple proud moments every day, when pieces of furniture are revitalized to serve one generation to the next, or when a custom-conceived piece fits perfectly in a space. We also have the big moments that make us look back with pride and gratitude, from the opportunity to partner with the Archdiocese of New York to work on the custom construction of the Pope Francis Papal Chair, to watching our team on HGTV.
